Sameeha Akudi: School Direct Trainee
After graduating from the University of Leeds with a BA Honours in Fine Art, I quickly landed an internship as a Marketing Assistant for a Financial Services company. The role involved designing marketing and branding material for Aviva, Liverpool Victoria and Santander, to name a few. My creative background meant that the 9 to 5 office job was just not stimulating enough, and working to tight design briefs was incredibly restrictive.
Eager for a career change, I took a chance voluntary position in the Fine Art department at Batley Girls’ High School. The fast paced, dynamic and collaborative working environment was instantly enthralling and I felt strongly about a career in education. Since then, I have worked in various roles at the school and I am thoroughly enjoying my time on the School Direct training programme. Teaching is relentless and a lot of hard work, but the time spent getting to know pupils and experiencing the fabulous ideas they have to share, make it more than worthwhile. I have never been happier in a job and I have no doubt that the bright and talented pupils I work with every day are fully responsible for that.
